Frozen fields stifle football, hockey and rugby across Newark and surrounding districts
Frozen pitches all across the region caused games to be postponed as grounds were deemed unserviceable for sport.
Football, Hockey, and Rugby games were all affected with only a handful of matches going ahead.
Over several days, pitch inspections were conducted and many matches that were not played on the latest synthetic surfaces were called off.
Southwell City Football Club had their game against Gedling Miners Welfare called off due to their pitch being frozen in parts.
The Zebras will next travel to Dunkirk on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) for their United Counties League Division One fixture, weather permitting.
Southwell’s development side were also unable to play but the reserves got a game in as they travelled to Stapleford where they lost 4-1 on a 3G pitch in Division One of the Notts Senior League.
Also in the same division of the Notts Senior League, both Bingham Town and Kirton Brickworks games were called off.
Heavy overnight frost ruled out Newark Rugby Club’s 1st team home match against Leicester Forest at Kelham Road.
The clash has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 18.
No Newark rugby was played on the weekend due to bad weather.
The 1st’s will travel to Long Eaton on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) as they hope to get a game this weekend.
This postponement follows two previous cancelled games because of the bad weather before Christmas against Oadby Wyggs and Old Silhillians.
Newark will now play those matches against Oadby Wyggs on February 4, at Kelham Road, and on February 25 away to Old Silhillians.
Newark 2nds, who lead their league, host Sleaford this Saturday at Kelham Road, (kick-off 2.15pm).
The club’s colts team are scheduled to play on Friday at Kelham Road, at home to Moderns, (kick-off 7.30pm).
Everything was called off at Bingham Rugby club as they battled the big freeze.
All Southwell Rugby games were also called off due to frozen pitches.
Newark and Sherwood United’s proposed match at Heanor Town was also called off, the side will play at home on Saturday against Leicester Nirvana (kick-off 3pm).
In hockey, a 2-0 victory by South Nottingham over Beeston was the only game reported in the area as games at Newark Hockey Club were cancelled.
