Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship led by George Gamble after the penultimate weekend of the season at Silverstone

Epperstone’s George Gamble took over the championship lead after the penultimate weekend of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship at Silverstone.

Gamble was on the podium twice during the weekend, a second overall and a class win in race two and third in class in race one, taking maximum points on his challenge to win the championship with now only two rounds to go.

The 28-year-old finished fifth in Pro Class and P7 overall in qualifying.

Race One saw a total change in weather with torrential rain making conditions treacherous. It would provide an interesting race of 30 laps or 30 minutes, whichever came first.

After a two-lap safety car start, by the end of lap one Gamble was up into sixth.

By the end of lap three he was up to fifth where he remained cautious due to the heavy rain but six laps later Gamble was in third.

He remained there for 13 laps despite many attempts at getting past Pro-Am driver Abbie Eaton. On lap 22 Gamble ran wide to drop a place and then he dropped a place with three laps to go, finishing third in class and fifth overall.

Starting race two fifth on the grid, he was up to second after a great start with Eaton in front.

Some great driving by both followed, Gamble trying his best to catch her out. By lap four he was 0.902secs off Eaton’s bumper, lap six saw them picking up the back markers and getting stuck in traffic as they lapped cars on the bad choice of slicks. A lap later Eaton got caught up in traffic again and Gamble pounced, missing out but he had made up time by half a second.

On lap 20 Gamble got caught up in traffic to Eaton’s advantage and while he was still trying to take charge, he didn’t want to make a mistake. He crossed the line second overall and first in class, to lead Will Martin by two points in the standings.

Gamble said: “It was an amazing weekend, race two was about making the right tyre choice, the track remained wet and didn’t really dry out, it was a good call by the team getting me out on wets.

“I’m going to the final two races at Brands in a solid position and let’s hope we can keep it going.”

The final race weekend in the series is at Brands Hatch on October 5-6.
