Good times roll on for Newark club
Newark Rugby Club completed a league double over Derby to put the Kelham Road team in good heart for tomorrow’s trip to Paviors at Burntstump (kick-off 2.15pm).
The club’s followers were treated to another expansive display against Derby in the Midlands Two East clash, with the return of Russ Westcott to the wing giving the Newark attack a new edge, and he ended up scoring two of the six tries, one in each half.
Westcott was joined on the scoresheet in the first half by tries from Matt Brewer, after a catch and drive off a line-out, and Michael Dobson who scored following a disrupted Derby scrum.
Those three tries gave Newark a 22-0 lead at the interval, with Danny Coen kicking a penalty and two conversions.
Newark continued to dominate in the second half and gained a fourth try off another scrum when Charlie Claydon, the captain, drove over.
The scoring was finished off by two of Newark’s fast men in centre Alex Moore, following good link play by Coen and Dobson, and then Westcott after some excellent phased play.
Derby did gain a consolation score only for the match to end on a sour note for both teams because each had a player dismissed after a melee involving several players, with Lewis Cove dismissed for Newark.
The positives for Newark were the performance of fit-again prop Harry Pick and the continuing good work of centre Chris Tate alongside Moore.

A stirring second-half recovery gained Newark 2nds a draw at Derby to keep them top of their section in the Pennant.
Newark found themselves 15-0 down at the interval but a number of substitutions including new flankers Craig Hawes and James Wood.
Hawes scored almost immediately from a drive and then poached a second after a catch and drive from a line-out, and they drew level with a further try from wing Angus Spencer.
