Newark and Sherwood United are out of the knockout cup after losing 3-2 against Ashby Ivanhoe before bouncing back with a 2-0 win over Pinchbeck in the United Counties League Premier Division North
Newark and Sherwood United met Ashby Ivanhoe for the second time in three weeks as they travelled to Leicestershire for the quarter finals of the Knockout Cup and lost 3-2.
The Highwaymen were hoping to avenge a 2-0 defeat suffered at home in the league which coincided with Jonathan D’Laryea’s last match in charge at the club.
New manager Romaine Graham was at the helm for the latest encounter with The Knights and there was a sense of cautious optimism as the team took to the road.
That optimism was compounded when Tom Jones opened the scoring for the visitors in the 41st minute but was quickly dashed as Ashby equalised in the dying stages of the second-half.
Ashby pulled ahead after the break as they initially scored in the 65th minute before pulling ahead further in the 72nd to put the score at 3-1.
Newark and Sherwood United rallied thanks to a second goal in the 89th minute from man-of-the-match Tom Jones however it would not be enough as the final score ended at 3-2 and the Nottinghamshire side were out of the cup.
It was a better showing for The Highwaymen in the league when they travelled to Pinchbeck on Tuesday evening and walked away with a 2-0 victory.
Ironically, Pinchbeck are also known as the knights.
The Highwaymen led the entire match as recent signing Ben Henderson got his side on the board in the 41st minute.
Henderson cut inside the defence and fired a superb ball past the Pinchbeck keeper to make it 1-0 at the break.
Liam Moran made it 2-0 in the 72nd after Jamie Williamson hit an attempt that rocketed off the cross bar only to be seized upon by the quick thinking Moran.
Williamson who was on debut was awarded as the man-of-the-match for his efforts.
It was a nicely won three points for The Highwaymen who moved ahead of Ashby Ivanhoe in the United Counties Premier Division North table although Ashby hold six games in hand.
The Highwaymen will now host Deeping Rangers on Saturday, (kick-off 3pm) in their next league fixture.
