Young boxer Rhys Alexander from Newark, Nottinghamshire secures sponsorship with Newark and Sherwood United after showing initiative

Initiative has paid off for a 13-year-old fighter who seized the day and asked his favourite football club in the area for sponsorship.

Rhys Alexander who trains at Carl Greaves Boxing Gym impressed Newark and Sherwood United when he asked them to support him with his boxing costs.

“Rhys got in touch with the club directly himself,” said Newark and Sherwood United operations manager, Jed Wright.

“When he approached us and took the initiative, I thought this was amazing to see from a 13-year-old.

“Given the way that Rhys approached us, we were keen to support him on his journey.

“I think it is a great example for other young people out there who want to chase their dreams.
“He didn’t wait for an opportunity to come to him, he went out there and looked for one.
“Talking to his dad Neil at one of our home matches, it is easy to see just how self-motivated Rhys is as he gets up early to go and train before school.

“This attitude will take him far in life and we are delighted to be involved with him on his journey in the sport.”

“I knew that the club is involved with Carl Greaves and they sponsor some of his professional fighters,” said Rhys.

“So I thought I needed a sponsor for my boxing shorts and they are the best football club in Newark so I texted them.

“A few days later Jed got back to me and I have been to a few games.

“I want to turn professional and be a world champion one day.

“I love boxing and have been training for ten years, I actually like getting punched in the face.

“My goal is to have 100 amateur fights before becoming a professional.”
