Jockey injury mars fixture
A jockey was hurt when he fell from his horse in the second race of the South Notts Hunt Point-to-Point at Thorpe on Monday.
Miles Seston, currently third in the Midlands Area Point-to-Point Championship, was riding the 3-1 shot Eskimo Pie when he fell on the final circuit of the course.
The race finished but the meeting was delayed for 35 minutes while he was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital, and the fence was rebuilt.
Seston’s accident happened in the Anne Jepson Memorial Confined Hunts Race, named in memory of the former secretary of the South Notts Hunt.
The race attracted the biggest field of the day with 11 riders.
Seston was among the leading pack in the closing stages of the race when his horse fell at one of the final fences.
The winner was the 6-1 ride Harapour, ridden by its owner Richard Hunnisett, in a time of six minutes 49 seconds, 31/2 lengths ahead of Sovereign Quest ridden by Richard Armson.
The first race of the day was the Jackson’s Butchers South Notts Hunt Members’, Subscribers’ and Farmers’ Race which had an entry of just four.
It was won by joint favourite Farmer Frank, owned by Mr Roger Jackson of Holme Farm, Gonalston.
Ridden by Steve Magee, it took the lead early in the race and although it was chased by the other favourite Be Upstanding, ridden by Seston, it was an easy winner in a time of six minutes 52 seconds.
The PTT Design Ltd Ladies’ Open Race, with a field of five, had one of the most exciting finishes of the day.
The 25-1 outsider Gawrosz from Poland, ridden by Heidi Critchlow, pulled up midway through the race after trailing too far behind.
By the halfway stage the 6-5 gamble Ballyalbert, ridden by Hannah Lewis, had taken the lead from Teeton Priceless, ridden by Elizabeth Harris.
Lewis pulled away from the pack and seemed to be heading for victory but in the closing stages the 11-10 ride Rainbow Tree, ridden by Rachel Hodson, picked up pace and managed to win by just a length.
Stuart Morris had a great ride on the 5-1 gamble Tender Tangle in the Bournston Group Men’s Open Race and snatched first place from the odds-on favourite Persian Hero, written by Richard Barrett.
Matt Mackley took Seston’s place in the Frank Key Builders Merchants Restricted Race on the favourite Dream Garden, which romped to an easy victory 15 lengths clear of Richard Armson on Burn Brook.
Seston had also been the intended jockey for 5-4 favourite Ski Dazzle in the Fernwood Group open maiden race.
Replacement rider Steve Magee rode it home first across the finish leaving Richard Barrett on Pennytino again in second place.
More than 3,000 people attended this year’s event.
