National Cross Country Relays well attended by Newark Athletic Club

By Connor Thompson

The National Cross Country Relays series brought the best out of Newark Athletic Club.

Club representative Becky Taylor said the Berry Hill Park course in Mansfield saw some great results for runners across all age groups, considering the horrendous, wet conditions.

The highest placed team was the under-15 girls — Amelia Chrispin (07-45) Niamh Monaghan (08-53) and Elizabeth Wynn-Jones (09-02) — who finished the combined 6k route in 36th from 98.

The club’s junior women’s team, who each ran 2.5k, finished 27th from a smaller pool of teams.

The group was made up of Laura Bates (09-46) Tilly Owens (12-02) and Celia Davis (11-49).

Josh Clee (07-57) Joseph Mink (08-04) and Ryley Picker (08-55) recorded a 52nd-placed finish in the under-13 boys’ run. Each ran 2k.

That finishing position was coincidently matched by the senior ladies, who were led by Cloe Hubbard in 11-16.

Becky Gallop (12-46) and Alsiion Monaghan (15-39) also contributed with strong 3k times.

And the highlight for the senior ladies’ team will be the joy of finishing ten places higher than the senior men’s group, who were 62nd.

The four-person men’s A group was led by Oli Carrington’s 17-59 finish, while Jam Bailey (19-07) Damian Davies (20-35) and Tom Hubbard (20-50) closely followed. They tackled a 5k course.

The B and C group also competed, finishing 120th and 135th respectively.

Simon Roberts (20-25) Adrian Dix (20-20) Lee Braithwaite (23-56) and James Talbot (23-20) made up the B side, while Tim Bagguley (21-37) Gareth Owens (23-42) Rian Shiel (27-50) and Carl Braithwaite (22-53) each produced strong times for the C team.

Eleanor Monaghan (11-05) and Alice Gibbs (13-48) ran 2.5k each for the under-17 ladies’ team.

Jasmine Braithwaite was the solo runner in the under-13 girls race, finishing her 2k run in 09-11.

David Cross, Gary Tasker and Steve White turned out in Striders orange at the national relay championships.

Member Graham Welsh said good times were recorded for the runners, who took on 5k legs.

Cross was first back in 23-18, followed by Tasker (25-18) and White (27-53).

On Sunday, four Striders were at Wollaton Hall for the Royal British Legion 5K Poppy Run.

Nicole Henderson, Bonnie Tinsley, Sara Webb and Di Holmes all took part.

Lynne Boby became the club’s first parkrun ‘Alphabeteer’ at Zamek w Malborku in Poland, having run at parkruns beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

A week of rain meant there was just the one race for Notfast, with Fay Parker and Claire Wood completing the Three Rivers Challenge at South Kyme.

The 15-mile riverbank trail run saw them travel along the river Slea, through Billinghay and towards Witham.

They finished together in 02-29-00.

A chilly evening at the showground also saw local runners take part in Beaumond House’s Fright Night fun run.

Mark Jackson, Sue Wilkinson, Alison Carman, Sara Webb, Graham Welsh, Stephanie Welsh, Jane Freshwater, Stephen Tomlinson and Bonnie Tinsley all helped raise much-needed funds for the Newark charity.
