Newark boxer Cameron Moran, 22, prepares to make his professional debut in Brighton

A Newark boxer will make his professional debut on Saturday night.

Middleweight Cameron Moran, 22, will open his professional account in Brighton against Jake Webb in the 17-fight show dubbed Battle On The Beach.

“I have been in camp for about 15 weeks, so I am ready,” said Moran.

“I have really enjoyed it. There has been ups and downs, but you expect that.

“I am training in Worksop at the X Box Boxing Academy so the days have been long sometimes.”

Moran, trained by Chris Boyle, of X Box Boxing Academy, forged a partnership with his mentor after fighting one of his amateurs.

“I boxed one of his lads in my first amateur fight and then I met him again at a few different events,” said Moran.

“I then started seeing what he was doing on Facebook and things like that, so I reached out to him because I saw his lads were doing well.

“I went down for a couple of training sessions and then we just kicked on from there.

“With it being a new trainer, we have stripped the training back to the basics and almost started all over again to see what needs working on.

“We have been working on my footwork with a lot of different drills so I can switch (stances) quickly.

“I have been in against a few big, tough lads as well so looking back at it, it has been a tricky camp.

“I have felt good though, I never normally liked head sparring but I have been getting serious rounds in with lads from all over the country.

“I have been in with some top lads — one from Newcastle, one from Birmingham and one from Mansfield.”

The 22-year-old, who had a short amateur career, boxing only six times, said he takes inspiration from a lot of the big middleweights.

“I am a slick fighter rather than a stand-up fighter,” said Moran.

“I like to get around the ring and get my shots in quickly.

“I like to be quick on my feet and, fighting at middleweight, I have taken a lot of inspiration from the big middleweights in the pros — the likes of Canelo Álvarez and those types of fighters.”

Moran’s debut bout, at the Brighton Hilton Metropole, will be streamed for free on FITE TV and Viva Live.
