Newark's Tom Cowling backed to fulfil potential by trainer Carl Greaves ahead of ring return next month
Carl Greaves is set to let Newark’s answer to middleweight destroyer Gennady Golovkin off the leash next month.
Greaves hands Tom Cowling the toughest test of his promising professional career in Leicester on Saturday, September 11.
The 24-year-old is matched with Jan Ardon at the Morningside Arena.
Greaves says Ardon takes on the best and gives everyone a fight, but is convinced Cowling will claim a fifth straight win.
“I’ve got massive hopes for Tom,” he said.
“He’s been carrying an injury in his first four fights, but he’s on the mend now and looking really good in sparring.
“I’ve known Tom since he was ten years old and I’ve always rated him highly.
“Now he’s putting his injuries behind him we will see more from him.
“Tom reminds of (IBF middleweight champion) Gennady Golovkin.
“He’s so strong and solid, just like Golovkin.
“Everyone he’s been sparring has said how strong Tom is.”
Cowling has been out of the ring since March, when he outpointed Josh Hodgkins over four rounds at the Britannia Hotel in Nottingham.
Though, Ardon promises to be tougher.
The Manchester-based southpaw has spent his nine-fight career fighting out of the away corner against top prospects and has yet to be stopped.
Greaves said: “Tom is training hard because he knows this is a step up.
“When he was an amateur, Tom used to train just hard enough, but now he’s a pro and knows he’s got to work harder if he wants to fulfil his potential.”
The Morningside Arena card, promoted by Greaves, will also feature undefeated Newark light heavyweight fighter Olly Marple.
He last fought at the King Power Stadium, Leicester, in September 2018, earning a points win over Raimonds Sniedze.
Familiar faces in Stanley Stannard, Kyle Hayward, Callum Blockley and Sheldon Purdy will also feature at the top end of the bill.
Doors open at 5pm. The first bell is at 6pm.
