A bronze medal was won by Newark Hockey Club under-10 girls in the In2Hockey Midlands finals at Nottingham Hockey Centre.

They produced their best performance at the tournament, which featured the 16 top-performing clubs in the region, for many years.

Newark, coached by Charles White and Paul Eagles, finished the league stage as runners-up to eventual winners Sutton Coldfield.

They faced a tough test in their first knockout match, beating Belper on penalty flicks, before losing to Repton in the semi-final.

However, the youngsters picked themselves up and scored a late goal in their bronze-match against Beeston to claim third place.

Club president Tim Burch said: "What an outstanding result from these talented young hockey players.

"The future looks very bright for hockey in Newark."

The girls who featured in the squad were Scarlett Bateman, Jemima Bicknell, Kitty Cameron, Martha Campbell, Neve Littlewood, Priya Mann, Sophie Munro, Emily Parczuk and Seren White.

Newark will switch their attention to the under-12 girls’ squad, which will contest its Midlands finals on April 29.
