Newark Rugby Club’s Spencer Syme-Nicholson named in the Midlands under-18 squad
Newark Rugby Club’s Spencer Syme-Nicholson has gained a place in the Midlands under-18 squad for regional matches in the coming weeks.
The prop started his rugby at Highfields School in Newark and is part of the club’s mini and youth section.
He was one of nine colts from the club who started out on the representative ladder by playing for the Notts, Lincs and Derbys county squad which leads to a Midlands squad being selected.
The Newark nine were Mateusz Dogiel, Charlie North, Daniel Woodward, Nate Churchill, Harry Waterhouse, Fin Teal, Henry Allen, Conner Cnockeart, and Syme-Nicholson.
The club’s first team return to league action this Saturday at home to Ilkeston, aiming to continue improved form following a 55-7 win at Tamworth.
The 1sts had a rest weekend last Saturday but the club’s 2nds team had an outstanding 46-39 win over Mosborough 1sts in front of a large Kelham Road crowd.
Both sides scored five tries with Johnny Marshall and colt Finn Teal, making his senior debut, both bagging a brace of tries.
The difference between the two sides proved to be the reliable boof of fly half Matt Cox, who collected 21 points.
Newark Colts also had a successful day on Saturday, beating local rivals Kesteven 34-12 in the semi-final of the NLD U18 Cup.
The game was closer than the scoreline might suggest. as Newark held a slender half-time advantage at 15-12.
But the home side pulled away with another try to make it 20-12 and then extended their lead following an interception try which was converted to extend their lead to 27-12. In the closing minutes, Newark sealed the win with another converted try to give them a fully-deserved 34-12 victory.
Newark will meet Mansfield in the final which is scheduled for March 15.
