Poor weather stops most rugby games and Brian O'Driscoll visits Southwell Rugby Club
Like other sports in the area, most district games in rugby were called off because of the cold conditions.
Newark Rugby Club hopes to return to action this Saturday after their league match against Oadby Wyggs was cancelled at the last minute.
The match had looked to go ahead but the visitors decided that the pitch was not fit for action because of the icy conditions at Kelham Road.
Newark officials had hoped a junior pitch would be satisfactory, having decided that the main first-team pitch was not playable.
The match-day referee had also given the go-ahead but Oadby decided otherwise.
The match has been re-arranged for Saturday, February 4.
Newark 1sts are next scheduled to play at Old Silhillians on Saturday.
The teams met earlier in the season ending in a victory for Newark, 27-20.
Newark are sixth in Regional 2 North Midlands, having steadily improved results in the last two months.
The 2nd and 3rds matches were also cancelled but the club’s Colts team did play a friendly, on the same pitch prepared for the league game, defeating Nottingham Corsairs 31-5.
Tries were scored by Noah Marshall, Ethan Herbert, Ovi Gilder (2) and Matthew Morgan.
A bag of new O’Neills triple grip balls was awarded to Bingham Rugby Club after their under-tens team was awarded the NLD Team of the Month for November.
It has been a great season for the young side after securing an invitation to Mattioli Woods Welford Road in the Prima Tiger Cup.
Senior games were also cancelled at Southwell Rugby Club due to bad weather.
Former Irish international player Brian O’Driscoll visited and was presented with a club tie to celebrate the centenary of Southwell Rugby Club.
O’Driscoll wished the under-15 side all the best in their upcoming tour of Dublin.
Southwell recently celebrated their winter Christmas ball, a black tie event which was well attended.
