Newark & District Double Board Darts League: Linda Gregory and Anice Wells of Railway Youngers win 11th ladies’ winter league pairs title since 2005

Linda Gregory and Anice Wells of Railway Youngers have claimed an amazing 11th ladies’ winter league pairs title since 2005 after success in the Newark & District Double Board Darts League competition held at the Castle and Falcon.

The duo, who last won the title in 2019, were made to work hard in their pursuit of another final as they had to come from behind on each occasion, up to and including the semi-final. Their opening clash saw them hit a finish apiece as they edged out team-mate Debbie Braithwaite and Collingham’s Sharon Hovey before a brace of checkouts from Gregory earned them another 2-1 win over the reigning champions Mandy and Debbie Walker of the Castle & Falcon Bangers.

In the semi-final, it was Gregory again who landed both finishes as they edged out Linda Brockson and Ann Hubbard of the Wheatsheaf, 2-1.

Their opponents in the final were Kathy Buttong and Anita Scott of the Bangers, who came from behind to defeat Wheatsheaf’s Jayne Higgins and Helen Wheeler 2-1, before a 2-1 semi-final win, in which they both shared the finishing again, over Collingham’s Leanne Forman and Amy Rayney.

The final was a tight affair but the Railway’s better finishing proved the difference. The opening leg saw chances on both sides before Gregory’s double-1 checkout gave the former champions the early advantage. The next leg again saw both teams see opportunities come and go before Scott levelled the match with a double-16 finish. The Railway pairing restored their advantage in the next as Wells holed out on 41 (single-9, double-16) with their rivals lying in wait on 65 before securing a 3-1 victory in a tight fourth leg which saw both pairings on double-1 as Gregory held her nerve to land the decisive checkout.

In the men’s competition, Paul Gallacher, who has won the winter pairs crown on seven previous occasions, and 2018 winner Kevin Rose partnered up to emerge victorious on a terrific night of darts which saw the winners reach the final without dropping a single leg.

Their opening match saw them overcome Balderton Cricket Club’s Paul Colcomb and David Lynn before securing another 2-0 win over the Arrows’ Lionel Garrad and Mick Sale. Their quarter-final clash saw them defeat the Taverners’ pairing of Simon Cobb and Richard Taylor before two finishes from Gallacher clinched their place in the final after they defeated another Taverners’ duo of Brian Coughill and Russell Rose.

Their opponents in the final were reigning champions Neil Ward and John Esam who reached the semi-finals without dropping a leg as they overcame Castle & Falcon BBC2s’ James Brown and Stuart Hay before defeating RHP’s Craig and Charlie Ashley. Their semi-final match saw Esam hit both finishes as they edged out Wheatsheaf team-mates Paul and David Thompson 2-1.

In a quality final the reigning champions, who were contesting their fourth final in five seasons and hoping for a third win, took the opener with Ward checking out on double-top with their opponents waiting in vain for an attempt at 70. Rose, also of the Wheatsheaf, then drew his side level as he holed out on 80 with their rivals sat on 64.

The match continued to be a closely contested affair but it was Gallacher, who plays for RHP Darts of Hazzard, who put his side ahead for the first time in the final as he checked out on double-10 with the current holders hoping for a shot at 53. The fourth and ultimately final leg saw Esam and Ward set up a shot at double-top but the chance never came as Rose hit a tremendous 80 checkout of two double-tops to clinch a 3-1 win and give a fitting end to a great night of darts.

The final night of the league stage of the Premiership Singles League promises to be a thrilling night as eight of the 12 participants still have a chance of ending the season as the Premier Singles champion.

Currently Matthew Glover leads the way and is the only player currently guaranteed a place in the semi-finals at the end of season play-offs but Jon Dawn is hot on his tail after he closed to within just two points of the leader when he inflicted only a second defeat on Glover this season with a 2-1 win.

Stuart Glover currently occupies the final guaranteed semi-final spot in third place but former champion Simon Cobb strengthened his hopes of a top-three finish as he moved to within two points after picking up a maximum six-point haul on matchday seven with 3-0 victories over Jon Gough and Richard Taylor.

The other players who currently occupy positions fourth to seventh, which will play off for the last semi-final spot, are David Thompson, Steve Alexander and Robson Worthington, but they will be looking over their shoulders at debutant Kevin Edwards, who is four points adrift in eighth.
