Beau Watson has a different alcoholic drink after each mile in Robin Hood Half-Marathon as he raises money for Footprints Conductive Education Centre charity

Footballer Beau Watson came up with a novel idea to raise money for charity - but he paid the price afterwards.

Watson, a goalkeeper with Newark & Sherwood United, sank a different drink after each mile of the Robin Hood Half-Marathon in Nottingham.

The list included Sambuca, Wray & Nephew rum, Madri beer, Strawberry Daiquiri, Tequila Rose, WKD, rose wine, Vodka Red Bull and Prosecco to finish as he crossed the line in a time of 2hr53min.

A celebratory pint at a nearby pub turned into eight or nine more and he ended up staying out until midnight after the race which took place on Sunday last week.

It’s no wonder he was feeling the effects for a couple of days afterwards, although his efforts paid off as he and a group of workmates raised more than £2,000 for Footprints Conductive Education Centre, which helps children with disabilities.

“We’re seven young, generally fit males, so it should be easy to do a half-marathon,” explained Watson, 26.

“In that sense it’s hard to get people to donate so I thought ‘let’s add a twist’.

“The other six ran it normally but I decided to sell each mile and if you donate this amount, you can choose what drink I have after that mile.

“Somehow I got it done in 2:53, so I was happy with that, especially as I probably spent half an hour of that having drinks and thinking, ‘Oh, my days, I feel horrendous!’

“It got people to donate and we raised an extra £400-500, so it was worth it.

“I actually wasn’t too bad until about an hour-and-a-half later.

“After we finished I went for another pint and then it hit me.

“There’s only one way to go after that, so we went to watch the football, had eight or nine more pints and ended up being out till midnight.

“Luckily our game on the Tuesday night was called off.

“We trained on Wednesday and, by then, I was just about human again.”

Watson was sponsored by Newark & Sherwood players and staff, with team-mates Jamie Goddard, Ross Woolley, Luke White, Toby White and Ryley Thompson among those waiting for him at the finish line.

Anything for a good cause although the goalkeeper doubts his idea will take off.

“I’ve never heard of it because people aren’t normally that stupid!” he said.

“Everyone was like, ‘Are you sure you’ll be OK?’ or ‘I’ve Googled that, it’s probably not ideal’ but I was thinking I’d sweat the drink out.

“I thought the first three or four would be fine because it’s only three or four, so they’re not going to hit you in that sense. I’m probably going to lie low for a while until I think of something else to do.”

Watson is the second-choice goalkeeper at Newark & Sherwood, behind Woolley, who chalked up his 100th appearance at the weekend.

As a team man, it’s a role he’s happy to play.

“I just like being around the lads,” he said. “It’s a good group and when you’ve got that, you just want to turn up and be involved as much as you can.

“Whether that’s to play or to help out beforehand with the warm-up, or just be a good lad around the changing room, it all counts.”
