Coddington and Winthorpe 1sts win against Claypole in South Notts League Division H.
There was a return to winning ways for Coddington and Winthorpe 1sts as they secured an eight-wicket win in South Notts League Division H.
At home for the second week running, Coddington & Winthorpe started the game well against Claypole, writes Joshua Mee.
With Claypole batting first, Coddington & Winthorpe seized the opening advantage.
Opening bowlers Jake Warrener (3-29) and Ewan Butterfield (4-32) reduced Claypole to 51-7 with some excellent new ball bowling, before an eighth-wicket partnership added 55 runs to the score.
Drinks were taken and then the final three wickets fell cheaply, leaving Claypole all out for 115.
Opening batsman Dan Sullivan carried his bat through the innings, scoring a chanceless and well-battled 67 not out.
In reply, Coddington & Winthorpe made a steady start to their innings as the Claypole openers Matt Taylor and Kristian Lennon bowled in good areas, not giving too many opportunities for scoring.
This resulted in the first wicket, and should have been two in two balls, as Ewan Butterfield was dropped trying to play through the covers first ball.
Instead, he went on to make a momentum-turning 33 off 31, including a huge six.
Excellent wicket-keeping from Steven Markham kept the pressure on the batters, as well as being the cause of Butterfield’s dismissal.
However, opening batter Josh Mee carried on where Ewan left off, steadily taking the home side towards the victory. Although dropped earlier in his innings, he made the most of his second chance, scoring a patient 61 not out, including a six to bring up his 50 and a four to win the game for the batting side.
Captain Ewan Butterfield said: “It was a great performance and a well-deserved win. Every player gave something towards that result, whether with the bat, ball, or in the field.’
Away from Holme Lane, the 2nds were strongly beaten by Calverton 3rd XI, losing by ten wickets.
This weekend, the 1sts will be looking to make it back-to-back wins away at East Bridgford, while the 2nds look to bounce back with a home game against Bingham.
