Coddington and Winthorpe lose to Bramcote 2nds in South Notts Cricket League

Coddington and Winthorpe fell just short in the run chase as they suffered a narrow defeat in the South Notts Cricket League, writes Joshua Mee.

The side were looking to return to winning ways in Division H after a short break, but Bramcote 2nds held their nerve for an 11-run victory.

Bramcote batted first and it was Coddington and Winthorpe who struck the first blow when the umpire adjudged Ewan Butterfield’s delivery would be going on to hit the stumps.

After this first wicket, though, a steady second wicket partnership took the score to 57, before another 50-partnership took the score to 110-5.

After the fifth wicket fell, the Bramcote lower order took advantage of the older ball, with Venkata Durgarao Nuvvula (34) and Vishal Gandra (43) scoring runs rapidly to take the score to 201-7 at the end of the innings.

The innings was kept together by Simon Fletcher (47), whose innings set the platform for the rest of his team, especially whilst wickets fell in the middle overs – when Joshua Jones took three for 27.

Coddington and Winthorpe began their chase steadily, but lost their first wicket to a superb delivery from Rakesh Androta, who went on to dismiss the first three batters for 41 runs.

Butterfield (22) and Dominik Modd (34) added runs in the middle overs, taking the score to 105-6.

Although just under 100 runs were needed, the game wasn’t completely over, and a fantastic innings from Jake Warrener (44), supported by Joshua Jones (29), gave the away team real hope of snatching a victory.

However, the Bramcote bowlers held their tight bowling lines, taking the wickets of both Warrener and Jones, leaving the game all but won and Coddington and Winthorpe ended their innings on 190-9.

Coddington and Winthorpe captain Ewan Butterfield said: “When I was batting with Josh, it looked like the game was going our way, but then that contentious decision happened, and it just kept slipping away from us. Jay being run out at the non-striker’s end didn’t help either and it was really disappointing to fall 12 short.”
