Nottinghamshire Premier League: Burhan Alam scores 79 not out to guide Collingham to victory

Collingham 1sts’ lead at the top of Division 2 in the Nottinghamshire Premier League remains at eight points after an eight-wicket win over Anston 1sts on Saturday.

This time left to chase after batting first the previous weekend, Collingham limited Anston to 192-8 from their 50 overs.

But skipper Burhan Alam delivered a captain’s knock of 79 not out to get them across the line on 196-6 with nine balls to spare.

Collingham & District had made a decent start when opening bowler Liam Tew (2-31) took the first of his two wickets, bowling Harry Pearson for 18. Then Max Shenton run-out Albie Smith to leave them 70-2.

Collingham & District continued to build steadily throughout the innings, as Buddika Karawgodalage top-scored with six boundaries in his 43 from 51 balls.

However, Adam Mendham (2-37) claimed scalps with consecutive balls, a caught-and-bowled effort to dismiss Karawgodalage and then trapping Lewis Brealey in front to leave himself on a hat-trick.

He was unable to repeat the dose, albeit it did help to check the Anston momentum.

In reply, Ross Taylor was dismissed for just one and Joel Saxelby (19) and Ben Jones (14) also went fairly cheaply for Collingham & District to leave them 42-3.

But at this stage, Alam and wicketkeeper Jack Copley shared a 90-run partnership before the latter was dismissed off Harry Pearson (2-51).

There was no stopping Alam, though, and he had delivered two maximums and been at the crease for in excess of two hours by the time they reached the victory line.

Collingham & District visit second-bottom Thoresby Colliery this Saturday.

There was a second defeat in a row for the 2nds in Division C of the South Nottinghamshire League, losing by four wickets to Bingham 1sts.

Sam Derry’s unbeaten 46 helped to guide them towards 134 all out in the 40th over as just three team-mates made double figures while Santhosh Vasu (4-26) was the pick of the Bingham bowlers.

In reply, Wilf Wright returned figures of 4-20 from 12 overs and Lee Fazackerley (2-24) also got in on the act but it wasn’t enough as Bingham won in the 37th over.

There is a fixture-free weekend coming up for Collingham & District 2nds, whose promotion prospects have now ended.

Collingham & District 3rds suffered a 30-run South Nottinghamshire League Division L defeat to Keyworth 3rds.

There were wickets for opening bowler Harry Geeson (2-15) and skipper Andrew Sears (2-16) in Keyworth’s 159-8 from 36 overs.

Opener Tom Mason provided a platform, offering 46, but only Max Clayton (29) and Sears (26) offered much else.
