Dean Sugden officially announced as a Great Britain boxing coach
Newark boxing coach Dean Sugden has described the last 12 months as, "an amazing year."
The Newark Amateur Boxing Club and Suggy’s Gym head coach has just been appointed as a boxing coach for Team GB.
For the last 12 months Sugden has been on a world-class programme for coaches at GB Boxing, run in conjunction with the England Boxing Pathway Performance Coaching role that he took on at the beginning of 2023.
The result has been an action-packed period where he has completed several milestones.
Sugden was assessed at the English Institute of Sport for his level three coaching qualification with England Boxing and also went with the England senior team away to two international competitions.
“Working with the very best amateur boxers and coaches in the world, I have also been developing my knowledge around Performance Coaching in boxing," said Sugden.
"I have been able to access some of the best training and personal development available.
“After a great year of working with Podium and Academy Boxers at GB in a development role, I have seen some of England’s senior boxers progress in a short time to GB Boxing.
“Now I can officially announce that I am a GB Boxing Coach.
"This will mean a lot for Newark Amateur Boxing Club, Suggy’s Gym, and the East Midlands Region where I am the head coach.
“As a sessional coach for Great Britain and England Boxing, I will still be heavily involved both across the region.
"In my club, I am lucky enough to have a fantastic team of two Level two coaches and five Level one coaches, as well as one more in the making supporting me.
“It’s been a tough year for me academically but a great and busy period of coaching and learning.
"I have achieved a certificate in high performance in sport with GB Boxing, and am currently working towards a performance coaching certification in Boxing with England that will be completed in April.
“After attending a 10-day course I also completed an IBA one-star coaching qualification.
"This is an international qualification that’s recognised worldwide and allows me to corner all over the world including the Olympics if I’m asked and required to do so by GB Boxing.
“I am super proud to represent my country England as a Coach.
"I am delighted to break the news that on top of coaching for England, I am now officially a GB Development Coach.
"I am buzzing to be able to help the world-class coaches and
boxers at GB up in Sheffield potentially become Olympians and realise their lifetime dreams.”
