Newark and Sherwood United announce interim boss Romaine Graham as the new man in charge after the football manager impressed during the last few games
A football club has declared its new management team two weeks after announcing the departure of its previous man in charge.
Newark and Sherwood United confirmed interim manager Romaine Graham as their latest permanent gaffer after he showed promise with his first games in command.
Graham replaced former professional footballer Jonathan D’Laryea who was the manager of The Highwaymen from late 2022 and the team brought home the county cup to the trophy cabinet during his time as the man in charge.
Graham was brought on board at the start of the year as the assistant manager and took the wheel after D’Laryea departed the club.
Things have fallen into place for the new boss who in just over a year went from player to captain, departing the club, coming back as assistant manager and now taking the reins of the step-five outfit.
The former Eastwood player captained the Newark side during the final victory over Carlton Town in the Notts Senior Cup and D’Laryea brought him back for his calming presence, as well as his leadership qualities.
Graham has shown himself to be a capable leader who has a positive impact on the team, his first game back at the club when he returned to be assistant manager saw the side win 3-1 against a highly fancied Melton Town.
Since taking the leadership role Graham’s side suffered a narrow 2-1 loss against Wisbech Town and triumphed 3-1 in an emphatic win over Heanor Town.
The way the team played during this time was enough to give Graham a shot in charge.
“Following a thorough recruitment process during which the club received 15 applications including one from Australia and two from Spain,” said the club’s commercial manager, Jed Wright.
“The Highwaymen board have decided to appoint their interim manager, Romaine Graham, into a permanent role.
“We had some excellent applications from strong candidates, but the board’s view was that the vision and strategy presented by
“Romaine was compelling and has already started to show through positive team performances.
“His task will be to give us a strong run into the end of this season and build a competitive side for next season.
“Romaine has history with The Highwaymen having captained the team last season, lifting the Notts Senior Cup for the first time in the club’s history.
“He plans to appoint Tristan Spencer as his assistant and the pair will have to hit the ground running with the League Cup quarter final on Saturday versus Ashby Ivanhoe, and an important league match next Tuesday against Pinchbeck United.”
