Top-ten finish in Belgium 24-hour endurance test at Circuit de Spa Francorchamps for Tom Gamble while brother Harry Gamble raced at Anglesey Circuit in Wales
Racer Tom Gamble travelled to Belgium for the Fanatec GT World Challenge AWS Endurance Cup at the Crowdstrike 24 Hours of Spa race at Circuit de Spa Francorchamps.
With teammates Benjamin Goethe and Dean MacDonald, he took the Garage 59 Motorsport #159 McLaren 720S GT3 EVO to a position overall result after completing 536 laps around Spa’s 4.352 mile circuit, writes Paul Horton.
The team started the weekend in fine form. Free Practice saw them 20th out of more than 55 cars on track. They took 22nd combined qualifying out of four sessions and just missing out on Super Pole.
As the lights went out, it was 24 hours of top class racing throughout the day and night with usual drama expected.
The race saw its ups and downs for the trio on track with a few dramas and excursions to the pits. By the 12-hour mark, they were among the top 30 runners and moving back and forth among the frontrunners with pit stops and driver changes.
Six hours later, Gamble had been in charge for some of the period placing the car into 18th spot despite tricky conditions during the night and early morning.
With only three hours left the team were flying.
Goethe and MacDonald had got the car into 14th.
An hour later Gamble was out again remaining in 14th spot.
The last hour saw him move the McLaren into 12th then to take the flag in ninth in the Pro Cup.
Tom said afterwards: “We got a solid result after a few setbacks during race, Ben and Dean did an incredible job driving in mega tricky conditions and all the Garage 59 team who worked so hard.”
It was a different type of scenery for his brother, Harry, who raced at Anglesey Circuit, Wales, where he was graced with good weather to take a podium place in the Ginetta GT Academy Championship.
Qualifying saw him finish third, 0.325secs off pole.
After finishing 11th in a wet race one, he lined up on the reverse grid in third for race two, taking the flag in fourth.
For race three he started 18th on the grid out of the 19 starters. A great start and a scrap for fourth paid dividends that saw Harry take the flag and a podium place in third.
