Newark Rugby Club get a good win on the road against Mellish in the Regional Two North Midlands competition
The Regional Two North Midlands competition saw Newark Rugby Club scrape a hard earned 15-13 victory on the road.
A try in each half earned Newark a fifth win of the campaign in a tough encounter at Mellish.
Full-back Jack Drabble opened the scoring after only eight minutes with a difficult conversion then being missed.
Newark were able to do a good job putting Mellish under pressure in defence for most of the game.
The big Mellish pack threatened Newark's line time and again but the defence were able to do their job to a high standard.
Mellish converted a penalty and continued to pressure Newark.
At half-time, the score was 8-6 in Newark's favour.
Soon after the restart, there was a long pause for an injury to the Mellish 15 and both sides recycled their benches.
Mellish almost broke the standoff with a storming run down the left wing but Newark just managed to hang on in defence.
Newark won a penalty and a break led to an optimistic kick ahead by Billy Charles which fell kindly to enable Ovi Gilder to hang on and touch down for a try.
James Tarbett managed to convert the try and also successfully hit a penalty to add much-needed points on the board.
There was a celebration as the team pulled ahead to give a score in Newark's favour of 15-6.
Mellish were not to be deterred and before the final whistle, they went over for a try at close range.
It was then converted with the last play of the game.
This narrow win, 13-15, will bolster Newark's mid-table position and give confidence for the matches coming up, starting on Saturday at home to Walsall, kick off 2.15pm.
Newark’s 2nds earned a second league win of the season beating Belper on Saturday, 22-19 at Kelham Road on Saturday.
The 2nds play at Ashby this Saturday.
Newark Colts completed a successful weekend for senior teams by dominating their National Colts Cup tie at Doncaster on Sunday to win 38-19.
Next up is a trip to Market Rasen which is scheduled for next weekend.
