Newark Town are beaten by Barton Town in the FA Cup
Newark Town's first-ever adventure into the FA Cup ended in defeat on Saturday.
The Blues went down to a 5-2 away reversal in their extra preliminary round clash with Barton Town.
They found themselves three goals at the break and, although Newark improved in the second half, the damage had been done in the opening 45 minutes.
Newark had gone close from a couple of early corners before they fell behind in the 18th minute when a cross was headed home by Ryan Thompson.
The home side's lead was then doubled four minutes later when Elliot Broughton's effort put Barton in control of the contest.
Alex Hales and Ryan Rushen both went close to reducing the deficit with shots before Barton bagged a third ahead of the half-hour mark.
They were awarded a penalty for hand-ball which Scott Phillips converted for their third goal in nine first half minutes.
Newark came out for the second period determined to right the wrongs of the first 45 minutes and they reduced the arrears within 60 seconds of the restart through Sam Wright.
Barton thought they had restored their three-goal lead when Grant Tait converted only for his effort to be disallowed for offside.
Hales then made it 3-2 with a goal five minutes later and Newark were back in the contest.
Half-time substitute Sean Woolley went close to equalising before Newark had a strong penalty appeal for a hand-ball shout turned down.
Ryan Smith saw a header tipped over the crossbar as Newark pushed more men forward as the game entered the latter stages.
And, with 10 minutes remaining, Barton were able to take advantage of that as Andy Norfolk made it 4-2.
A fine save from Josh Wilson prevented Barton increasing their lead before the fifth goal arrived in the 88th minute through Reece Moody.
It put the game beyond Newark and their Northern Counties East League hosts progressed to the next round where they will visit Northampton ON Chenecks.
