Newark & Sherwood United’s first match of season vs Shirebrook Town ends in draw

A missed penalty and free-kick hitting the post meant Newark and Sherwood United’s first match of the season ended in a draw.

Saturday saw the Highwaymen open the 2024/25 season with an away game against Shirebrook Town in United Counties League Premier Division North.

After a goal-less first-half Newark and Sherwood took the lead just after the break with Sam King on the score sheet.

But Shirebrook pulled one back from a corner soon after.

The Highwaymen saw a penalty saved with 20 minutes to go and a free-kick also hit the post as they had to settle for a point.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, manager Romaine Graham said the result was a case of two points lost, rather than a point gained.

“We were superior to them, but we didn’t create enough to go on and win, we lacked a bit of desire in the final third to take the game by the scruff of the neck and get the job done, so on another day we would have gone on to win but it just wasn’t our day.”

Captain Jamie Goddard said the players “didn’t do enough”. “They [Shirebrook] were well organised and well drilled with a good defensive shape and I don’t think we did enough,” he said. “We are together and will bounce back and there will be a reaction, there’s no two ways about it. We got into some good areas but I don’t think we did enough when we were in those areas, the gaffer talks a lot about taking but collectively we didn’t take today.”

On Tuesday, the Highwaymen drew 2-2 with Harrowby. It was a home game but the pair are currently ground sharing. Cummings scored in the tenth minute and Henderson in the 22nd.
