World silver for ice hockey star

By Advertiser Reporter

Jodie Bloom is determined to improve after gaining a silver medal at the Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships.

The 23-year-old, of Newark, was competing for Great Britain in Division Two Group A.

They started well with four successive wins against Australia, North Korea, Mexico and Slovenia, but narrowly missed out on a gold medal after defeat in their winner-takes-all clash with the Netherlands.

Great Britain needed to beat the Netherlands, who had also been unbeaten, to claim the title and promotion, but three second period goals saw them eventually lose 4-0.

Bloom said the team pushed as hard as they could and should be proud of their efforts. “We gave it our all but it was not to be.

Netherlands were fantastic, so all credit to them,” she said.

“We threw everything on the line all week and we had such a bond on and off the ice.

“We came so close to that gold medal. If things had gone our way in the final game, then who knows what might have happened.

“As much as we are disappointed not to win gold, we should be proud of the silver. We will be back next year.”

The championships marked Bloom’s first appearance for the team for two years after she missed out on selection last year.

She has been playing for Sheffield Shadows ice hockey team since she was 16, and is their top scorer in the Elite Division with five goals from seven games.
