Battle Of Britain remembered
An exhibition to commemorate the Battle Of Britain will be hosted at The Natural World Centre, Whisby.
One of the highlights will be on RAF fighter pilot John Gillespie Magee. He was an American who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was then sent to Britain to train on the Supermarine Spitfire. He wrote the poem High Flight after his first flight.
The sonnet became popular internationally and has inspired many pilots since. A copy has even been taken into space.
John, who died on a flight in Lincolnshire about six months after writing the poem, is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Scopwick.
A group is now working on a memorial to celebrate his life, contribution to the war and his links to North Kesteven.
The exhibition runs from September 8 to 29.
