Southwell Minster, Coventry Cathedral, Derby Cathedral and Leicester Cathedral choirs to perfrom Duruflé’s Requiem alongside Sinfonia Viva at Southwell Minster

Four cathedral choirs are to join forces with a professional orchestra for a spectacular cathedral concert.

The professional orchestra of the East Midlands’ region, Sinfonia Viva, will perform Duruflé’s Requiem alongside the choirs of Southwell Minster, Coventry Cathedral, Derby Cathedral and Leicester Cathedral.

The concert will take place at Southwell Minster on February 8.

It is the first time the choirs will join forces for a performance, which will see them deliver French composer Maurice Duruflé’s imposing setting of the Latin mass.

It’s foundations in Gregorian chant offer a timeless quality to the piece.

The three-part concert will also include a virtuoso performance from Southwell Minster’s Rector Chori Paul Provost, who will perform Poulenc’s Organ Concerto, and the orchestra will play Vaughan Williams’ firm favourite Fantasia On A Theme by Thomas Tallis, which was especially written to be performed in cathedrals.

Matthew Kofi Waldren is the concert’s conductor, Hannah Morley the mezzo-soprano, and Felix Kemp the baritone.

On February 7 there will be more music filling the cathedral, at the Friday Lunchtime Concert.

The 45 minute free concert, with a retiring collection for the Minster’s Organ Scholarship, will see bassoon player Lynda Edwards and cellist Pippa Mason return following a successful concert last year.

They will perform a selection of music by Mozart, Brahms and some film music.

The following week, on February 15, Southwell Minster Choir Association’s annual Come and Sing morning returns.

Attendees can lend their voice to a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass, under the direction of Geraint Bowen, organist and director of music at Hereford Cathedral.

The day will begin with a rehearsal, before and informal performance which singers are encouraged to invite their families to attend.

Details for booking and payment for the Come and Sing event are available on the cathedral’s website.
