Dramatic start to adventurous village season

Comedy, music, drama and dance — Village Ventures has it in abundance in its new season of shows. The rural and community touring scheme for Nottinghamshire gets off to a flying start with a performance of Nursing Lives in Southwell Library on September 17 at 7.30pm.

The show by Vamos Theatre looks at the work of nurses during the second world war.

The entertainment continues with music from the New Budapest Café Orchestra. The group play folk-based tunes from Eastern Europe, inspired by the music of European gipsies.

They will be in concert at East Markham Village Hall on September 24 at 7.30pm, at Norwell Village Hall on September 25 at 7.30pm and at Thurgarton Village Hall on December 1 at 8pm.

The East Midlands-based New Perspectives Theatre Company returns with a production of Farm Boy, using storytelling, puppetry and music. It can be seen in Lambley Village Hall on October 7 at 7.30pm.

Graffiti Classics — dubbed the stand-up string quartet — make a welcome return and will play a feast of frenzied music in Colston Bassett Village Hall on October 1 at 7.30pm.

Music ranging from opera to toe-tapping musicals will be featured by Flamin' Dames who present Luck Be A Lady at the Dean Hole Community Centre, Caunton, on October 8 and Flintham Village Hall on October 14.

Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo will be brought to life by the Oxfordshire Theatre Company at Grange Hall, Radcliffe, on October 21 while the London Philharmonic Skiffle Orchestra will raise the roof at Dean Hole Community Centre on October 22.

The science of cloning sheep and the music of Dolly Parton are combined in a new show by the New Perspectives Theatre Company. Dolly can be seen in Lowdham Village Hall on October 22.

Colourful costumes and comic characters feature in Flying Panda's version of The Story Traders Of Sichuan at Upton Village Hall on November 17 and Oxton Village Hall on November 19.

Appalachian Roots present Fiddles And Feet at the United Reformed Church, Burton Joyce on November 18, while Garlic Theatre stage Little Red Robin Hood at Dean Hole Community Centre on November 24.

The magical story of Miracle Of 34th Street will be retold by Farnham Maltings in Southwell Library on December 2, The Spirit Of Christmas Past will be performed by Fleurs de Lys at Aslockton's Thomas Cranmer Centre on December 10 and Alice In Wonderland is brought to life by Oxfordshire Theatre Company at Gunthorpe Village Hall on December 11.
