Eclectic mix of classical music
The 66th season of concerts by Newark and District Music Club features an eclectic mix of artistes. All take place at the Palace Theatre, Newark.
The first in the 2010-11 season is on Saturday, October 9 and features a performance by O Duo.
Percussionists Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox joined forces in 2000 when they were students at the Royal College of Music.
Since then they have performed at many venues in Britain, appeared twice at the BBC Proms, and have won many awards.
The musicians are interested in educational work and the club is hoping to arrange a workshop with young percussionists on the morning of the concert.
Their repertoire spans more than 300 years and is a mix of popular classics and accessible contemporary music played on two marimbas, vibraphone and lots of percussion instruments.
The second concert on November 6 features violinist Tasmin Little and pianist Martin Roscoe.
Tasmin is not only continuing a flourishing international solo career but is also involved with chamber ensembles and directing orchestras.
She plays a 1757 Guadagnini violin and has on loan from the Royal Academy of Music the Regent Stradivarius of 1708.
Martin, who played a piano duo with Ashley Wass last season, is a renowned international soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He works regularly with Tasmin.
The third concert is the Freddy Bond annual concert and takes place on November 27.
Members of Opera Della Luna will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates Of Penzance.
This comic operetta will be presented in English by the company as performed by a fundraising vicar and his parishioners, entitled The Parson’s Pirates.
Music by Aquinas Piano Trio will be featured in the fourth concert on Sunday, January 16.
This chamber group comprises violinist Ruth Rogers, pianist Martin Cousin and cellist Katherine Jenkinson.
The programme includes pieces by Haydn, Mendelssohn and Saint-Saens.
The Haffner Wind Ensemble make a return visit on February 26 with oboeist Nicholas Daniel.
The group is one of Britain’s leading chamber ensembles and one of the most established wind quintets in Britain.
Each member is a chamber musician and a soloist as well as a principal of the Britten Sinfonia.
The final concert on March 12 features The Isis Ensemble, conducted by Jacques Cohen, who played for the first in Newark Parish Church in June.
The concert was extremely well received by the audience and many wanted the chance to hear the group again.
The programme will be announced at a later date.
All tickets are available from the Palace Theatre box office,
As well as the six concerts, the club holds recorded music recitals on the first Friday of every month at Newark Town Club.
