Exhibition continues gallery owner’s work
Visitors to Galerie in Kirkgate, Newark, are in for an extra surprise as one of the rooms has been turned into an exhibition area for artist Henrietta Clavering.
From her studio in Beckingham, she has worked on striking graphic images of trees in winter and turned them into limited edition prints and printed textiles.
The prints, which are available to order framed or unframed, began as sketches of trees in Stapleford Woods. They include a long hawthorn hedge, tall pines and stands of woodland.
The images have also been printed onto linen and used on tailored cushions in a range of shapes and sizes with backs made from linens, wools and cashmere.
Henrietta’s sketchbooks are on display alongside them so it will be possible to see how the images evolved. There are some cards and small lino print studies for sale.
Henrietta, who trained as a sculptor, was a co-ordinator at Artspace in Southwell.
She said it was her first exhibition at Galerie and her first for a number of years since having two children, Hector, 5, and Connie, 9.
“I had known Gill and Peter Jennison from Galerie for a few years and Gill has been a great supporter of my work,” said Henrietta.
“Sadly Peter died in August and I was honoured when Gill said I would be the first person to put on an exhibition here since his death.
“It is called Seeing The Trees and as well as creating limited edition prints I have been exploring putting my work on different kinds of fabric. I am even looking at wallpaper designs too.”
Henrietta, 42, said her work would appeal to most people as there was something for everyone, with tree designed cards priced from £1.95.
She said the cushions were made locally in Beckingham by her seamstress friend, Sarah Martin.
The prints were made in Sleaford, the framing was done by Max Neale from Beckingham, while the fabric for the cushions came from The Loft at Farnsfield.
Henrietta, who is married to Judd Ferrer from New York, runs a drawing club at Highfields School, Newark.
Gill said she was delighted to be asked to launch the HEC Studios first series of prints and Clavering Bespoke Textiles.
She said: “Peter and I started Galerie about five years ago and it was his vision to support locally-based artists, forming a creative community in Newark. He had an artistic background himself in dance and drama and started putting exhibitions at Galerie on a regular basis.
“It was horrendous losing Peter, but I am glad to be able to carry on the work he started. I would like to think he is out there somewhere, watching and smiling. There are already other shows and events in the pipeline.”
The exhibition runs until March 31.
