Willy Russell play Breezeblock Park is latest production by Robin Hood Theatre Company, Averham
Following the sell-out success of The Vicar of Dibley in December, Robin Hood Theatre Company’s first performance for 2022 is the spiky comedy, Breezeblock Park by playwright Willy Russell.
It will be performed at the Robin Hood Theatre, Averham, from Tuesday to Saturday next week, at 7.30pm.
Famous for hits such as Shirley Valentine, Educating Rita, Blood Brothers and Our Day Out, Willy Russell wrote Breezeblock Park early in his career, in 1975.
Set in his native Liverpool, it is a vintage comedy, featuring the highs and lows of a family gathering in a smart new council flat one Christmas Eve.
Vera, along with sisters Betty and Reeny and their brother Tommy and partners gather for a night of booze and banter that is both funny and moving.
Lurking beneath the tinsel and fairy lights lie concealed jealousies, petty recriminations and a secret. As the drinks flow and the feathers fly, Betty’s daughter Sandra drops a bombshell of seismic magnitude that shakes their breezeblock council flat, and all the occupants, to its foundations.
Director Pat Marks said: “I feel very proud and sometimes humbled by the amazing talent of my cast and I feel privileged to have had this particular group of actors to work with.
“It has been a challenging and highly emotional play for the cast, as the characters have different sides to their personalities, and to create them required a huge range of talent and selflessness.”
Making their debut on the Robin Hood Theatre stage are Kim Leigh, Gemma Bush, and Nathan Jones
The rest of the cast is Janina Sulek, Andrew Fearn, Andrew Beighton, Andrew Tallis, Nicci Hindson and Ziemek Kaczmarek.
Tickets are available from the Robin Hood Theatre website.
