Around 50,000 people attended the annual Robin Hood Festival in Sherwood Forest — almost doubling last year’s attendance. Nottinghamshire County Council says it is delighted with the figures.

The week began with a guest appearance from Robin Hood fans Debbie and Joe Tencza, pictured, from the New York Renaissance Faire who renewed their vows and stayed for the first day.

They made the trip from their home in Columbia, New Jersey, after Debbie’s recent successful battle against cancer, to celebrate 15 years of marriage.

There was much media interest including a film crew from CBeebies who are producing a show about medieval entertainment in the autumn, and from Ukrainian national television.

The festival saw jousting, falconry, street entertainment, archery and storytelling near the Major Oak.
