Festival’s feast of books and music
Writers of different genres, poets, comedians and musicians are ready to take part in the 14th Lowdham Book Festival.
Organised by Jane Streeter, of The Bookcase in Lowdham, and Ross Bradshaw, of Five Leaves, it runs from Tuesday to June 29.
Jane said: “For us, the joy of the festival comes from the wonderful books which we will be bringing to the public — books for all ages and tastes, books to inform and to entertain, books to talk about and to treasure.”
Ross said they also liked people meeting as many festival authors as possible, from the famous names to those making their debut.
The festival begins on Tuesday for lunch at Thrumpton Hall with Deborah Moggach at 12.30pm. Her book, These Foolish Things was made into the film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.
Journalist Marcus Berkman will talk about sport, youth, facelifts, hermits and rage in A Shed Of One’s Own — Midlife Without The Crisis at Caythorpe Cricket Club on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
Singer Hazel O’Connor will perform her hits, Eighth Day, Will You, Big Brother and If Only accompanied by saxophonist Clare Hirst and pianist and singer Sarah Fisher in Lowdham Village Hall a week tomorrow at 8pm.
Hazel will also be interviewed by BBC Radio Nottingham presenter Frances Finn and sign copies of her autobiography, Breaking Glass Barefoot.
Simon Mayo, who started his broadcasting career at Radio Nottingham, will be in the village hall on Sunday, June 23, at 2pm when he will talk about his career, his local connections and his books, Itch and Itch Rocks.
Crime writers Mark Billingham and John Harvey present An Evening To Die For in St Mary’s Church, Lowdham, on June 24 at 7.30pm. Mark has written books featuring DI Tom Thorne while John’s books focus on DI Resnick.
Molly Oldfield, a writer and researcher on eight series of the TV programme, QI, presents The Secret Museum in St Mary’s Church, on June 27 at 2pm, delving into the hidden archives of the world’s finest museums.
Author Mark Forsyth will talk about his books, The Etymologicon and The Horologicon in St Mary’s Church on June 27 at 7.30pm, a witty look through the secret labryinth of the English language.
Singer and songwriter Julie Felix will talk about her life and perform her songs about women’s power, peace, healing, freedom and human rights in St Mary’s Church on June 28 at 8pm.
There’s plenty of events for youngsters in the Children’s Tent on June 29, an all day book fair and cafe and talks by local and national authors.
