Hidden stories about Norman Conquest
The new season of Newark Archaeological and Local History Society got off to a flying start when Mike Kelley gave an interesting account of The Hidden Stories Of 1066.
He dismissed several popular rumours concerning the background to, and events of, the Norman Conquest of England.
He then gave evidence for more recent beliefs on the subject, including some misrepresentation of the Bayeux Tapestry.
The society’s vice-chairman and publicity officer Roger Peacock said that meetings this year, until further notice, would be held in Newark Library, starting at 7.30pm.
The next session on February 6 is in conjunction with Newark Engineering Society and features a talk on The Restoration Of St Pancras by N. Lowey.
This is followed on March 6 with Andrew Sankey giving a lecture on Ancient Mazes.
Valerie Henstock will give an address on the Civil War Through The Eyes Of Lucy Hutchinson on April 3.
The annual meeting followed by the heritage address is on May 8.
Dead Men Talking is the subject of Lily Ann Dawes, of forensic archaeology, on June 5, with a society outing planned for July.
Anyone wanting to know more about the society, come along to a talk or join it should contact secretary Jill Campbell on 01636 821781.
