Lee’s voice and charm win over hecklers
THERE were lots of screams and wolf whistles as Lee Memphis King took to the stage at the Palace Theatre, Newark, on Sunday for a Valentine’s night to remember.
Looking sexy in his black leather-clad outfit, he started his Elvis tribute show with a couple of medleys, much to the delight of many females in the crowd.
However, he had rather a tough time of it when he and four of his musicians gathered at the front of the stage to simulate the 1968 Comeback Special.
One woman asked him to sing One Night just for her and Lee had to tell her that they did not do requests as this was not a karaoke show and nor was he a DJ.
While telling the audience a little bit about the songs, one man asked him to get on with it.
They and other hecklers were soon won over as his voice sounded just like the real thing. He could also gyrate his hips and curl his lips like the king of rock ‘n’ roll. Highlights of the first half were Up, Down, That’s Alright, Memories, and Are You Lonesome Tonight?
In the second half, Lee wore the traditional white catsuit and really rocked the joint as he took the audience back to the Las Vegas years.
Highlights for me were Don’t Cry Daddy, In The Ghetto, Always On My Mind, Proud Mary, Blue Suede Shoes, One Night, The Wonder Of You and Way Down.
Lee’s version of My Way from Presley’s Aloha From Hawaii concert brought tears to my eyes as did American Trilogy.
After a standing ovation he belted out Suspicious Minds and Can’t Help Falling In Love With You. A memorable night — DAB.
