Modern twist on classic - Dr Faustus
The Christopher Marlowe play, Dr Faustus, can be quite heavy going but this new modern interpretation kept me and the rest of the audience interested throughout.
Faustus, who decides to sell his soul to the devil, is given only 24-hours before the devil arrives to claim it.
Director Rebecca Ladds set the amateur production in a seedy nightclub, with all the cast members wearing black and heavy eyeliner. The scene changes were slick, and had flashing lights while loud modern music was played.
Adam Stone was excellent as the tormented Faustus and I loved the scene where he slit his wrist open in the nightclub toilets so he could write his IOU to the devil in blood on a paper towel.
Oscar Morrey as Robin reminded me very much of Boy George and commanded great stage presence with his long golden locks, facial expressions and clear diction. His partnership with Wagner, played well by Dominic O’Connell, was hilarious.
Chris Belfield was excellent as the evil Mephistopheles who leads Faustus into a world of debauchery. Andrew Beighton as Lucifer made my skin crawl as he played his part in a menacing manner.
Justine Lee in fishnets and a corset, oozed sex appeal as The Evil Angel while Janna Hinchliff innocently played The Good Angel.
Some light relief was provided by David Driscoll as the neighbour and Seb Hufton as The Pope and Luc Chignell as the Knight, eating a Big Mac. Supporting parts were played well by Nathan Hufton as Valdes, Tim McManus as Cornelius and Bex Saxton as a student — DAB.
