Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra and more musical delights at Southwell Minster
An orchestra, organist, and choral composer are to bring the sound of music to a historic venue this month.
On July 5, Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra will visit Southwell Minster.
The orchestra, conducted by Mark Heron, will perform Smyth’s Concerto for Violin and French Horn, Walton’s Symphony No 1, and Martin Ellerby’s Epitaph XIV - Harvest of Sorrow.
Soloists for the concert will be Callum Smart and Ben Goldscheider.
Then, on July 6, the Music in the State Chamber concert — held in the Archbishop’s Palace — will be a performance of local composer David Machel’s new choral work Light Love Joy.
It ‘radiates optimism’, and comprises six movements, each exploring an aspect of its three main themes.
Katharine Dryden (mezzo-soprano) and Andrew Chadwick (violin) will be soloists in the concert.
The cathedral’s organ scholar, Timothy Selman, will perform on July 9, for the 2025 Organ Festival.
The festival marks the recent return of the Minster’s Nicholson Quire Organ, back from an overhaul.
Timothy will play Stanford’s Sonata No 3 ‘Britannica’, Cochereau’s Berceuse à la mémoire de Louis Vierne, and Widor’s Symphony No 5.
