Telling the tale of the Women of The Windrush at Nottingham Playhouse

Mesmerising film footage and powerful opera will interweave to tell the inspiring tale of the Women of The Windrush.

Filmmaker Shirley J Thompson put the spotlight on women from the Windrush generation back in 1992 with eye-opening, honest interviews.

As an award-winning composer, she reimagined that film in a fascinating new way for Windrush's 75th anniversary last year.

The result is an uplifting show that celebrates the courage and resilience of the women of that generation — and it will be showcased at Nottingham Playhouse on July 19 in a double bill.

The evening will open with a premiere of a new short opera created by Streetwise Opera, Paterson Joseph and David Austin Grey, Chips off the old block.

The 15 minute opera is inspired by the muisc of composers of African and Caribbean heritage.

Then soprano Abigail Kelly will give an electrifying performance of Thompson’s opera Women of the Windrush, interwoven with extraordinary documentary film footage, portraying inspirational narratives from the lives of women who travelled to the UK from the West Indies between the 1940s and the 1960s.

It's an evening that promises to leave you feeling inspired, moved and utterly spellbound.

It is part of a celebration of artists of African and Caribbean heritage as part of the Re:Discover festival.
