Perfect day for pop-up poetry

A lively audience for Pop-Up Poetry Readings and Slam was treated to a varied afternoon of poetry at the Gilstrap Centre, Newark, on Sunday.

Poems ranging from the amusing to the thoughtful were presented by local poets.

The inspiration for the event was Peter Jennison, who owns The Galerie in Kirkgate, Newark, with his wife, Gill. Peter attended as honoured guest and was warmly welcomed by all.

It was opened by the event organiser, Fiona Theokritoff, after which most of the performers read their own work.

They included Michael Hawes, Gill Jennison, Kate Koppana, Suzanne McCarthy, Brenda Millhouse, Dan Morelle, Jennie Searle, Fiona Theokritoff and Jane Wyles.

Peter Day’s poems were read by Tom McCarthy and Tina Paris’ contribution by Jennie Searle. Dan Morelle read a poem by Ella Morelle.

At the end of the programme, John Harper joined the poets on stage and read from his recent collection.

The Gilstrap provided a perfect setting for this entertaining poetry event.

The Save the Gilstrap petition was available for those attending to sign, to keep this fine building open for community arts ventures like Pop-Up Poetry.

All in all, a successful event and one that surely will be repeated — FT.
