Robin Hood fans ready for feast of forest fun
Robin Hood and his band of merry men are preparing for a particularly historic annual event next month.
The Robin Hood Festival, which was launched in the 1980s, is the premier international celebration of Nottinghamshire’s famous outlaw at the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Edwinstowe.
The 28th festival runs from August 13 to 19 and follows on from the end of the Olympic Games.
The free event attracts thousands of fans to the heart of Sherwood Forest to see how Robin Hood really lived.
Jousting, archery, falconry displays, a medieval rat catcher and other performers, musicians and entertainers will transport visitors back to the time when Robin pitted his wits against the Sheriff of Nottingham and other adversaries to help the poor triumph over the rich.
The seven-day event is packed with education and entertainment for all ages with a wide variety of entertainment including costumed characters.
Live jousting tournaments and falconry displays will take place on the Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
There will also be a wide range of craft stalls and activities.
Izi Banton, site manager at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, said: “Sherwood will be celebrating its 28th festival this year, and for many people it is the chance to step out of the modern world for a few hours and enjoy a taste of medieval life in the magical forest setting that is so appealing.
“The atmosphere created by the performers, who genuinely enjoy being in the forest, makes such a difference.
“It is a privilege to be part of the event. Although fun rather than historical accuracy is the main aim, it is amazing how much visitors can and do learn through the interactive nature of the festival.”
