A cheese and wine welcome evening will be held on Thursday, October 13, for people wanting to join Newark Amateur Operatic Society.

It takes place at Holy Trinity School, Boundary Road, Newark, at 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in joining the society, either as a performer or one of the backstage crew, is welcome to go along and meet the committee and society members.

In addition to the refreshments, everyone will have the chance to join the society in performing a selection of popular songs.

Society chairman John Bendall said: “Holding this informal get together will let people in the area who might like to join the society come along and meet us in a social environment.

“Not only are we looking for people to join to perform on the stage, but also we are always looking to get more members to help backstage with costumes and makeup.

“Everyone is invited to come along and we are looking forward to an enjoyable evening and to welcoming as many new people to the society as possible.”

The first singing rehearsal for the next show, Me And My Girl, is at Holy Trinity School on Thursday, October 20, at 7.30pm, followed by rehearsals at the same time and venue on November 3 and 10.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, November 13, at Highfields School, London Road, Newark, starting at 1.30pm.

Anyone wanting to audition will be expected to become a member. The cost for a performing member is £35 a year and for a non-performing member it is £20 a year.

Me And My Girl will be staged at the Palace Theatre, Newark, from March 19 to 24.

It tells the story of the Harefords, a family of aristocrats in the 1930s seeking the legitimate heir to the title of the Earl of Hareford.

Bill Snibson, a Cockney from Lambeth is found, but his common ways do not satisfy the will of the last earl. To gain his inheritance, Bill must satisfy the very proper executors by learning gentlemanly manners — and that means leaving his Cockney girlfriend, Sally Smith, behind.
