Brighton band Slung to play at Nottingham’s JT Soar as they tour to celebrate album release
A band is touring the UK to celebrate the release of their new single, which takes inspiration from sex work and the profession’s power dynamic.
Riff-laced Brighton band Slung have released their debut album, In Ways, which was released on May 2 via Fat Dracula.
The band, formed by Katie Oldham on vocals, Ali Johnson on guitar, Ravi Martin on drums and Vlad Matveikon on bass, will be performing at Nottingham JT Soar this Friday (May 16).
The single Class A Cherry, with its ominous, undulating bassline from Vlad Matveikov giving way to an immensely evocative vocal from Katie Oldham, was released a month prior to the album.
Katie said: “This song was inspired by strippers, escorts and sex workers and the power dynamics that come with that profession.
“It’s told from the perspective of a woman weaponising the male gaze that she must endure regardless, and advising others to use it for their own advantage.”
The strings in the song were composed and performed by a Ukrainian group called Kaska Studio String Section.
With shades of metal, grunge and an all-around plethora of alternative influences, ‘In Ways’ has been breathed into life by Slung through the supreme ability of its members and their vision.
Slung’s sonic universe is a veritable musical supernova, with the band’s members referencing influences as far-reaching as Deftones and Baroness, Wednesday and MJ Lenderman, Queens of the Stone Age and even Chappell Roan and Fleetwood Mac.
