Valentine visit from the king
One of the UK’s top Elvis impersonators will be looking to send girls wild when he returns to Newark’s Palace Theatre on Valentine’s night.
Lee Memphis King performs songs from Presley’s ‘68 Comeback Special, dressed in black leather, and then dons a white catsuit adorned with jewels to recreate the famous Las Vegas shows.
Lee said: “I am really looking forward to returning to the Palace and this time I am including a few new songs in my set.
“In the first half of the show I will be doing Elvis’s ‘68 Comeback Special in black leather and then it’s on to Vegas, with a few different songs this time.
“I have been singing like Elvis since I was a child. I was five when I saw the film Roustabout and I just wanted to sing like him.
“I had always been able to imitate people and really wanted to be like him so I practised every day.”
Despite being scared of the thought of going on stage, Lee was determined to go into showbusiness.
In 2001 he sent demo tapes to agents, which attracted interest.
His big break came in 2005 when he won the World Elvis Championships in Canada.
“Six months later I was given a chance to do this show and I have now been doing it for three years and I love every minute of it,” he said.
Lee now wants to take his show worldwide, especially to Europe, and to be accepted by all of Elvis’s fans.
In 2008 he made a live album, available to buy at the Newark gig.
