As part of Southwell Workhouse’s tenth anniversary celebrations, a Victorian village fete will be held a week on Saturday from noon to 4pm.

The event will see the grounds come alive with all manner of Victorian activities and themed stalls.

There will be lots for all the family to do such as trying their hand at skittles, skipping or finding out what is involved in solving an orthographical recreation.

For the competitive visitor, Master and Matron will judge a baked cake competition and run a guess the weight of the vegetable contest.

The paupers have already been practising for a tug of war contest that will open the event. The winning paupers will lead the Victorian country dancing, sing in the choir and recount stories of workhouse life.

Property operations manager Rachel Harrison said: “We are hoping to have a range of stalls selling local produce, hand-made goods and Workhouse favourites.”
