Asda worker raised £10,000 during his career
A warehouse manager raised more than £10,000 for charity during a career spanning more than three decades.
Mr Peter Speel started working for Asda in 1980. He joined the Newark store three years ago as a warehouse and grocery manager after working in the same role in Lincoln, Mansfield, Grantham and Retford.
During his career with the supermarket, Mr Speel has raised more than £10,000 for cancer charities, including Tickled Pink, which supports people with breast cancer.
Since organising a family day some years ago with store colleagues, Mr Speel has tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, an event that Asda now runs with staff annually to raise money for Tickled Pink.
The challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whern-side and Ingleborough in under 12 hours, which are part of the Pennine range. The route is 24-miles, and includes 5,200ft (1,585m) of ascent.
Mr Speel has completed it five times to date with a personal best time of 8 hours 34 minutes.
'So many fantastic memories'
He said he was always up for fundraising and since losing some of his family to cancer he had raised funds for cancer research when he ran the Lincoln Half-marathon.
Mr Speel said: “I have had so many fantastic memories working with Asda and would not change those for the world.
“I cannot believe how quickly the last 35 years have flown by. It is nice to see that we are all one big Asda family here and such a big part of the local community.”
Mr Richard Terry, general store manager at Asda Newark, said: “We are proud of all our colleagues at Asda Newark and we are especially proud of Peter for all of his hard work over the last 35 years.
“On behalf of everyone at Asda, I thank Peter for his dedicated service, his hard work and outstanding loyalty.”
