Angell’s Fisheries, of Barnbygate, Newark, wins Independent Retailer of the Year at Newark Business Awards, with Not My Monkey highly commended
Quality and sustainability were big factors in the Independent Retailer award going to Angell’s Fisheries, of Barnbygate, Newark.
Husband and wife owners Steven and Sophie Angell took the plunge on what once was a tired, rundown fish and chip shop with the aim of completely transforming it into an award-winning establishment which the community could be proud of.
The shop offers a wide variety of menu options, using sustainably sourced ingredients, which are traditionally prepared for an authentic feel.
On receiving the award Sophie Angell, was lost for words. She said: “I’m elated, It’s difficult to describe just how I feel right now.
“We wouldn’t be where we are today without the hard work and dedication from the team and the support and trust of the community.
“It’s hard to stand out in this industry, but we put everything into our business. It’s our life.”
Angell’s use MSC certified fish, butchers handmade pies made from locally sourced meat, and their own signature sauces.
Their chips are also incredibly popular, which Steven puts down to them being “crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.”
The business also prides itself on inclusivity, by introducing a cheaper alternative of fish and chips for those feeling the pinch during the cost of living crisis, as well as well as catering for those with a food intolerance or vegetarian diets through special events and deals.
They also mark national celebrations, have extended opening hours, and offer a click and collect service to make it easier for customers.
Looking to the future Angell’s hope to expand their reach with the introduction of a mobile van, new menu items, and an expansion across social media platforms.
Highly commended in this category is the coffee shop and wine bar Not My Monkey.
The independent business, based on The Wharf, serves food, drinks of all varieties, and holds live music events.
They prioritise customer satisfaction and have been a popular spot with residents since opening in early 2023, with figures suggesting that over 70% of customers are returning ones.
Now, they are in the process of modernising with the creation of online booking and ordering systems to streamline services.
Also highlighted was the business’ desire to incorporate more sustainable practices and address environmental concerns to meet a growing demand for eco-friendly products and services.
