Barge seen drifting down River Trent at Newark came loose from moorings at Nether Lock

A barge has been seen drifting down the River Trent at Newark today.

The hopper, an unpowered vessel used for filling, was one of six moored in the backwater at Nether Lock.

The Canal and River Trust said the privately-owned vessel was being used as a skip for maintenance work, but has somehow come loose.

The barge floated down the river and is currently sitting on the weir boom at Cromwell Lock.

No damage is believed to have been caused.

The trust is in contact with the owner to see how the vessel can be recovered. However, with river levels very high, it is not known when this will be.
