A broken down lorry which caused long tailbacks at Beaumond Cross in Newark today has been fixed and has left the area.

The lorry was travelling from Immingham carrying railway locomotive components to the other side of Newark when an airbrake switch snapped bringing it to a halt down outside the derelict Robin Hood Hotel cottages.

A fitter travelled from the company's headquarters to fix the problem.

Nottinghamshire Police said the breakdown happened at 11am. Officers were at the scene providing traffic management until the problem was resolved at 13.30. A spokesman said drivers had behaved sensibly in trying to get around the breakdown.
