Benches in front of war memorial outside Newark Parsh Church on Appletongate have been covered in bird poo

Benches in Newark town centre may have to be moved so that people can sit on them without being covered in bird poo.

The benches, in front of the war memorial outside Newark Parish Church on Appletongate, are splattered with mess from the birds that sit in the overhanging branches of a nearby tree.

Ann Harris, told the Advertiser she was shocked at the state of the benches, which she said were in a perfect spot to sit and relax.

“It’s in the middle of a tourist area, yet you can’t sit on them”, she said.

“It seems a waste of two perfectly good benches.”

The benches are owned by Newark Town Council, and town clerk Mr Alan Mellor said the council had asked a tree surgeon to see if the tree could be trimmed so the benches were no longer in the line of fire.

The benches are in any case due to be removed for repainting, he said, and, if the trees can be trimmed, will be replaced in their original position.

Otherwise, the benches could be moved slightly to allow people to sit on them once more.
