The Big Newark Sleep Out to support Newark Emmaus Trust, Shawmind and YMCA Newark and Sherwood

A host of people will be braving the cold next week for charity in The Big Newark Sleep Out.

It is being held to raise money for Newark Emmaus Trust, which supports young homeless people; Shawmind, which tackles mental health stigma; and YMCA Newark and Sherwood.

It takes place next Friday night at the YMCA Community and Activity Village in Newark.

To support the sleep-out Newark Freemasons handed over a cheque for £380.

It was presented on behalf of all masons who meet at the Masonic Hall in Newark.

They wished everyone taking part success in raising awareness to those less fortunate and who find themselves, for whatever reason, on the streets and at the mercy of the elements.

Nicola Burley, chief executive of Newark Emmaus Trust, said: “We are truly grateful to all the Newark Freemasons for their very generous donation towards our Big Newark Sleep Out.

“We hope that many more will follow their example and make a donation, although we appreciate that it is not easy in these difficult times, every donation counts no matter how small — it makes a huge difference and it is very much appreciated — not just by the Newark Emmaus Trust but by Shawmind and the YMCA Newark and Sherwood too.”

There is still time to register for the sleep out, sponsored by Buttercross Estates. Go to https://bit.ly/TBNSO2023

And if you can’t join them, donations will be gratefully received.

The Big Newark Sleep Out will provide a flavour of the life of a rough-sleeper for one night only to raise money for those who have no option but to sleep out every night.

The event aims to bring the community together as they sleep out beneath the stars, raising the profile of the young homeless.

Thousands of people sleep rough each night across the country, and prolonged rough sleeping makes it more likely for them to face challenges through trauma, mental health and drug misuse.
