A pub has won acclaim for the quality and standards of its toilets in the Loo of the Year awards.

The Butter Cross, Market Place, Bingham, has been awarded a platinum star rating by inspectors.

Staff spent 15 to 20 minutes cleaning its loos every hour between 8am and midnight.

This means they spend up to 320 minutes, or 5 hours and 20 minutes, every day cleaning the toilets.

The awards are aimed at highlighting and improving standards of public toilet provision across the UK.

Authorised inspectors make unannounced visits to hundreds of toilets at sites across the UK, in order to judge them.

All of the toilets are graded from bronze to gold with unacceptable toilets not graded at all.

The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer exceptional toilets.

The toilets are judged against numerous criteria, including décor and maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand washing and drying equipment and overall management.

Pub manager Joseph Harrison said: "Staff at the pub work hard to ensure the toilets are in first-class condition at all times and it is great that this has been recognised by the inspectors.

"We have one person designated to the toilets throughout the whole day.

"It's something we're quite proud of - the standards of our loos are important.

"We get plenty of comments from customers about the loos, that they look nice, they're always clean and well designed."

Loo of the Year awards 2014 managing director, Mike Bone said: "The toilets at The Butter Cross have been designed and fitted out to a very high standard and are both clean and well maintained.

"The pub richly deserves its platinum award - the highest individual award the judges can deliver."
